Former player Joel Wilkinson has accused the Australian football League (AFL) (Australian football) of racism. The athlete said that he intends to file a complaint with the Australian human rights Commission.
“I am here because I will no longer be silent. What happened is a violation of human rights. I suffered from racism during my AFL career and after I finished playing in the League, ” Wilkinson was quoted as saying by the AP.
According to Wilkinson, who played for the gold coast team from 2011 to 2013, he was abused by opponents and fans during a match in Melbourne. The athlete tried to get into the American National football League (NFL), but the clubs “new York giants” and “Arizona cardinals” did not sign a contract with him. After the end of his contract with gold coast, he was unable to find a team.
The athlete’s lawyer, will Barsby, claims that they were contacted by several other players who were also racially abused. It is not yet known whether these players will file a complaint. According to Barsby, his client was not offered a new contract in the team, because he began to inconvenience the “gold coast” because of the fight against racism.
The AFL leadership supported the right of an athlete to seek justice through the mechanisms of the legal system. The organization also assured that they will keep in touch with Wilkinson to understand the situation.
